Cycling

What better way to explore the beautiful countryside of the South Cotswolds? With it’s temperate climate, the flat lowland areas of the Severn Vale are ideal for cycling, especially for families. The east and south of the area is full of hills and valleys, with a great contrast in the land heights, and resulting spectacular scarp routes. Yes, even the hard work required to climb uphill can be well rewarded by the stunning views from the top.

Sustrans

We are on the National Route 41 and 45. It is now open between Gloucester and Marden, and from Salisbury to Amesbury.

The route south of Gloucester joins National Route 41 to Saul. For an interim period, it will continue along quiet roads to Chipmans Platt, then follow the Cotswold Canal for a short stretch before rejoining quiet roads to Stonehouse. It then follows the former Midland Railway, swinging just south of Stroud through quiet woodland to Nailsworth. The route then climbs quite steeply in places through Minchinhampton up to Hampton Fields onto a plateau through some quintessentially English countryside to Kemble and on to Cirencester. It continues southwards to the Cotswold Water Park and on into Swindon.

Stonehouse Wheelers Cycling Club

The Stonehouse Wheelers Cycling Club was formed in 1948.
They cater for all ages. Why not join them and explore the quieter lanes at a more civilised pace.

Rides are organised and lead to local beauty spots and places of interest covering usually 15 to 20 miles on Sunday afternoons.

For more ambitious riders there are longer all day rides.
In the summer months, Wednesday Evening Rides, cater for beginners and returners. There are also tours abroad and weekend trips.

There is a new Stroud District Cycling map which grades all the roads according to their suitability for cyclists; it can be bought from Tourist Information Centres. Additionally there are several books and pamphlets of local rides, as well as Sustrans maps, routes 41 and 45 (see above).
