| Berkeley Castle |
|---|
The centrepiece of Berkeley is undoubtedly the magnificent 12th century Berkeley Castle with its dark and brooding bloodstained history. Notably the oldest inhabited castle in England, having been home to 24 generations of the Berkeley family.
In 1215, the Barons of the West intent on curbing the power of King John met at Berkeley Castle, before traveling together to Runnymede to sign the Magna Carta. Just a century later in 1327, King Edward II was brutally murdered in the castle dungeons.
