John Trevisa: Champion of the English Language website

John Trevisa, c1342-1402, an almost exact contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer, did for prose translation what Chaucer did for poetry: he showed that English was not just the language of peasantry. Cornish by birth, he came to Berkeley in about 1379 as personal chaplain to Thomas IV Lord Berkeley, who commissioned him to translate into English a carefully chosen selection of Latin works. In this talk David Smith, Berkeley Castle Archivist, will separate truth from legend and illustrate Trevisa’s achievements with quotations from his works.
